Despite the awful weather so far, it got us thinking that summer should soon be upon us and with it comes heat – yes even here in GB it can  get hot. Now this may sound ideal but it can be a problem for a dog. Here are 10 tips to keep your dog healthy in the summer months.

  1.  Do not leave your dog in your car for any length of time in warm weather. Dogs can die very quickly in a hot car and suffer much more quickly than humans.
  2. Another reason for not leaving your dog out in the sun is he/she can get sunburn which is a big problem for a dog.
  3. Make sure your pet is protected from parasites.
  4. Your dog should always have access to fresh water and plenty of it.
  5. Always make sure your dog can find some shade as it can soon overheat in the sun.
  6. If you can, try and provide a pool for your dog to swim in. Not only do they love it but it’s a great way of cooling down.
  7. On the same note, make sure the dog can get out. High side pools can be a problem.
  8. If your dog is panting, make sure he can rest if out and about and give access to shade. Panting is his way of telling you he’s hot.
  9. Keep the dog on a leash as much as possible. With all the extra things going on in the summer he’s more likely to go off exploring and may get lost.
  10. Plastic dog kennels tend to heat up more so it’s better to have wooden dog kennels – good quality of course!
